<title><![CDATA['Verie sweete and artificiall': Lorenzo Costa and the earliest viols]]></title>

<p>The importance of the courts of northern Italy as the birthplace of the viol consort in the closing years of the 15th century has been well established since the 1980s, but until recently any performances of the repertory associated with the early viol consort have used instruments that date from considerably later than the 1490s and early 1500s. This article assesses the significance of two viols depicted in Lorenzo Costa&rsquo;s <I>Madonna and Child enthroned with SS Augustine, Posidonius, John and Francis</I>, a Bolognese altarpiece of 1497, as a source of information, by establishing Costa&rsquo;s relevance as a witness by locating his work historically and geographically in the same courtly circles that saw the initial rise of interest in the first viol consorts: those of the d&rsquo;Estes of Ferrara, the Bentivoglio family in Bologna and the Gonzagas of Mantua. It investigates the instruments in the painting in relation to other documentary evidence concerning the earliest development of the viol consort, including Castiglione&rsquo;s <I>Il libro del cortegiano</I>, and suggests a close constructional connection between these particular viols and the <I>lira da braccio.</I> It goes on to evaluate the results of performing on a set of instruments constructed on the basis of this painting.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Hearing John Browne's motets: registral space in the music of the Eton Choirbook]]></title>

<p>John Browne&rsquo;s pre-eminence among the composers of the Eton Choirbook has been asserted in many works of reference. This study offers a detailed investigation into his handling of the antiphon form to which the manuscript is the most substantial witness. These readings of the music (which are also &lsquo;hearings&rsquo;) focus in particular on his large-scale, richly scored motets with trebles: <I>O Maria salvatoris mater</I>, <I>Stabat mater</I> and the six-voice <I>Stabat virgo mater Christi</I>. It is here argued that an important dimension of Browne&rsquo;s work is a particularly sophisticated approach to the articulation of the Eton motets&rsquo; &lsquo;panel structure&rsquo;. This is achieved in a number of ways that effect both short- and long-term connections within the form. This discussion also expands on Hugh Benham&rsquo;s remarks on the use of textural contrast within the style of the Eton composers as a whole.</p>

<title><![CDATA[George Kirbye's Clemens parody]]></title>

<p>The recent appearance of an anthology of Jacobean Latin motets edited by Ross W. Duffin in the RRMR series focuses attention on a little-explored repertory of English music. Although the motet went into decline in the years following the death of William Byrd, there are some accomplished and interesting Jacobean and Caroline examples which repay study. George Kirbye&rsquo;s two surviving motets (<I>Quare tristis es</I> (<I>a4</I>) and <I>Vox in Rama</I> (<I>a6</I>)) are among the most distinguished examples of the Jacobean motet repertory. The second of these is of particular interest, because it turns out to be closely modelled on the setting of the same text by Clemens non Papa, published by Ulhard in Augsburg in 1549. Kirbye&rsquo;s motet, which survives in an incomplete set of manuscript partbooks (<scp>GB-O</scp>b Tenbury 087&ndash;11), takes up all the main imitative points of the modal and elaborates them, removing the modal ambiguity in the original and applying techniques which Kirbye had apparently learnt from his study of the works of Byrd and the elder Ferrabosco. Kirbye&rsquo;s setting, which may have been designed as a response to Weelkes&rsquo;s <I>Laboravi in gemitu meo</I> (<I>a6</I>), also adds something to our knowledge of Clemens reception in England.</p>

<title><![CDATA['Clefless' notation, counterpoint and the fa-degree]]></title>

<p>In recent years a number of music scholars have interpreted &lsquo;clefless&rsquo; musical works from the 15th century as grounded on the mechanism of hexachordal solmization. The basic assumption that drives such analyses is that medieval and Renaissance musicians were trained to understand the notated pitches as embedded in segments of six syllables and six pitches. Thus, the primary function of the flat and sharps signs found in &lsquo;clefless&rsquo; works has been taken to be one of indicating the <I>fa</I> and <I>mi</I> degrees of underlying hexachords.</p>
<p>However, the particular notational features of a &lsquo;clefless&rsquo; rondeau, Gilles Binchois&rsquo;s <I>Mon seul et souverain desir</I>, may point to different conclusions. This study suggests that &lsquo;clefless&rsquo; notation ultimately assigns priority to the octave-based notion of musical space (grounded on the seven <I>claves</I>) that shaped not only the structure of the gamut, but also the grammar of counterpoint. While six-syllable solmization may well have been successfully used to sight read this chanson, it was by no means a mandatory step for performance. The non-hexachordal approach to &lsquo;clefless&rsquo; notation proposed here is in line with the early history of staffed notation, as well as with the general orientation of medieval and Renaissance theorists on the issue of hexachordal solmization.</p>

<p>Josquin&rsquo;s five-voice <I>Je me complains de mon amy</I> incorporates the melodic and poetic fragment &lsquo;La tricoton, la tricoton / La belle tricot&eacute;e&rsquo;, derived from a pre-existing popular song, as its final couplet. Despite the unusual placement of the quotation and the obscure meaning of the word &lsquo;tricot&eacute;e&rsquo;, the chanson has attracted little scholarly attention. Relying on the concept of intertextuality, this article explores the signifying function of the insertion. The above quotation forms the last phrase of the tune &lsquo;La tricot&eacute;e est par matin lev&eacute;e&rsquo;, which survives in three 15th-century polyphonic settings. Its text is related to other &lsquo;Je m&rsquo;y levay par ung matin&rsquo; poems, whose associative meanings were easily recognizable by contemporary audiences. Comparison between the individual phrases of &lsquo;La tricot&eacute;e est par matin lev&eacute;e&rsquo; and the phrases of the canonic melody in <I>Je me complains de mon amy</I> reveals a one-to-one correspondence of their motivic content and structural layout. On the level of the poetry, the interaction of the &lsquo;tricot&eacute;e&rsquo; <I>topos</I> with the amorous complaint of the main poem creates a subtle layer of irony, present from beginning to end. The proposed reading reveals Josquin&rsquo;s reliance on the full verbal and musical &lsquo;text&rsquo; of &lsquo;La tricot&eacute;e est par matin lev&eacute;e&rsquo; and the social and cultural overtones with which the tune resonates.</p>

<p>Although it is known that improvisation was an important part of musical performance in the 16th and 17th centuries, studying how extemporaneous elements were incorporated into real-world situations has proven to be difficult. Improvisers, by nature, do not record what they do, but there is evidence that points to some of these individuals attempting to document their approach to music, namely in ornamentation manuals and individual pieces with written-out embellishment. Among these sources is British Library Ms. Egerton 2971, a 37-folio volume probably dating from the second or third decade of the 17th century, which contains, among other things, embellished versions of Giulio Caccini&rsquo;s <I>Amarilli, mia bella</I> and <I>Dolcissimo sospiro</I>, first published in <I>Le nuove musiche</I> (Florence, 1602). Sources like this, despite some inherent problems, offer the clearest window into the minds of improvisers of the time, and warrant further study.</p>
<p>The research in this article serves two purposes. First, the versions of <I>Amarilli, mia bella</I> and <I>Dolcissimo sospiro</I> contained in Egerton 2971 will be examined and compared to those published in <I>Le nuove musiche</I> as a case study of early 17th-century improvisation. Second, because of Caccini&rsquo;s open disdain for singers taking liberties with his compositions, an attempt will be made to see if these pieces might be examples of such treatments. The crux of the article aims to show that ornamentation of the time, at least as shown in these examples, was not a random act of substituting stereotyped musical patterns for given intervals, but instead points to a more robust idea of improvisatory thought. Rather than looking at individual ornaments or how specific musical gestures might have painted certain words, the overall structure of the ornamentation is examined to show that it is subject to deeper and subtler intellectual considerations of poetic structure, overall musical structure, and rhetoric.</p>

<p>Historically informed performances of 18th-century vocal works generally add embellishment to the composer&rsquo;s notes. While evidence does exist for this practice, certain factors have not been considered in the modern literature. One is the difference between &lsquo;skeletal&rsquo; and finished writing. Skeletal works, written mainly by secondary composers, lack any embellishment or figuration; thus pieces in this style, for which performers had to supply the ornamentation, have mostly vanished. Finished compositions, on the other hand, were to be sung as written. Gradually a fashion arose, particularly after the mid-century, for re-embellishing these finished pieces. In an effort to protect their work, composers added more notes to eliminate any opportunity for singers&rsquo; improvisations. Or a composer might leave an occasional bar unadorned to give the singer an opportunity to embellish, thereby keeping the peace while preserving his own work. This article will present views about singers&rsquo; ornamentation from the composers Johann Kuhnau, Johann Joseph Fux, Georg Frideric Handel, Johann Adolph Hasse, Christoph Willibald Gluck, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Vincenzo Manfredini, Andr&eacute;-Ernest-Modeste Gr&eacute;try and Joseph Haydn.</p>
