Musical offerings in the Renaissance

This article offers a model for the creation and circulation of musical compositions before the time they began to be treated as marketable goods (c.14701500). The model is that of the gift economy. The ramifications of the practice of musical gift exchange in the late Middle Ages are far-reaching, extending to issues of musical aesthetics and sociology.
